ALMERE C-SMART CAMPUS
TRAINING CENTER IN A DUNE LANDSCAPE
The landscape design of ‘CSMART Center of Excelences’, a maritime campus, arises from the ambitions, identity and atmosphere set in the framework of the quality manual of ‘Almere Duin’, a new development area.
The design creates a new dune landscape, deployed as the base for the whole campus. This not only reveals a variety of opportunities for the development of the site. It also offers the chance to contribute to this emerging new landscape by adding the ‘CSMART Center of Excelences’ as part of it.
The topography of the area is one of the key elements to create the desired atmosphere of a dune landscape. Therefore a large part of the site will be levelled up with high quality sand from the IJsselmeer. From the West to the East side an overall topography will be constructed, connecting to the edges of the site, creating an attractive dune formation with dune ridges (higher parts) and hollows (lower parts). This topography guides desired sightlines and blocks unwanted views. In addition, it creates places with privacy and wind protections. The overall topography is refined by creating differentiation in high, low, steep and gentle slopes.
Within the natural dune landscape a few special places are created. They enrich the environment, and tie the buildings in different ways to the landscape.
Adjacent to the eastern facade of the main building a hidden hollow is deployed as secret garden. This area is only accessible from the buildings, and is intended as an enclosed quiet area in the landscape.
The Fleet Control Centre and the Watershed building are connected by a large pond. The water surface acts as a pedestal for the buildings and reflects the facades.
At the east point of the plot, a small pond is nestled amongst the natural dune planting.
The main building has a wooden terrace, along the western facade, adjacent to the buildings’ interior piazza. The terrace has a spectacular view over the landscape towards the waterside promenade, the IJ Lake and the marina.
The main entrance to the buildings is designed as an access road, fluently shaped, gradually running down along the dunes towards the underground parking garage.
